Boglioli Spring/Summer 2013 Presentation

MFW | Boglioli Spring/Summer 2013 Presentation

During this month’s Milan Fashion Week, Boglioli presented their S/S ’13 menswear collection in a converted factory space. The offerings ranged from their signature unconstructed jackets, garment dyed suiting and casual, tailored staples while the event featured food and drink prepared by legendary figures of classic Italian menswear including Nino Cerruti (owner of Cerruti 1884), Lucian Barbera (of Luciano Barbera), and Mario Boglioli himself.

The Spring 2013 collection draws inspiration from two American gentlemen of the 1920′s: Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, icons of a sophisticated and timeless class. Classic elements of elegance are re-interpreted by Boglioli in a contemporary key with the addition of refined and sought-after elements.

Hard Graft | CarryOn Suitcase

Hard Graft has released the CarryOn Suitcase, their latest signature work. The brand’s known for making travel goods made from 100% vegetable tanned Italian leather and finished off with wool felt detailing. Their bespoke signature style comes to fruition through their small team of artisans in Italy who hand craft each piece with the utmost attention to detail. This is the case here as well with their new CarryOn Suitcase. It’s equal parts function and classic design as it’s got a bit of a nostalgic feel to it. Coming in at just the perfect size for short trips, this suitcase comes fully lined in rich British wool. The CarryOn Suitcase can be purchased through Hard Graft.

Makr Leather Glasses Case

Given the amount of time and money you spent painstakingly selecting the perfect pair of frames — protecting (and not losing) your favorite summer accessory should be a top priority. The fine leather craftsmen (some say magicians) at Makr obsess over every detail when it comes to the creation of their leather goods, and their glasses case ($90) is no exception. Each made in the USA case is sewn, edge painted, and polished by hand and features an antique brass button. Available in Saddle Tan, Navy Matte, and Black Matte Horween leather — any option you choose will put your current free pleather “case” to shame.

TaylorMade Ghost Manta Putter

As a general trend to more forgiving putter options for weekend warriors seemed to validate the putter’s size and complexity, last year’s TaylorMade Ghost Spider putter was an instant hit. But many golfers weren’t sold. Some felt the Ghost Spider was too massive or simply too hard on the eyes. Never being one to miss an opportunity for innovation, TaylorMade took the feedback in stride and has countered with the Ghost Manta ($180+) and we went hands-on this season.
Review continues after the jump.
The new streamlined head shape is being doubted, “neo-mallet”. We have to agree the smoother edges and slimmed down mass are much less distracting. The real benefit is that the Ghost Manta has retained a high MOI and forgiveness after the facelift. This is managed with two 50-gram tungsten weights and a third adjustable weight golfers can swap (sold separately) to find just the right balance. The Ghost Manta sports the same PURE ROLL insert as the Ghost Spider. Constructed of Surlyn, the face insert provides a nice balance of feel and firmness. One new tweak we missed on first inspection was a new double-bend shaft that gives the putter face the right amount of offset without causing any added distraction to the eye. A nice, subtle touch that helps round out a very comprehensive offering.

Am I going to have trade in my G-Wagon?

We’ll wait a moment while you gaze at the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon LAPV 6.X…
Now, wipe the drool….
We doubt Mercedes-Benz ever realized what they had on their hands when they first dropped the “G” moniker in 1926. Fast forward to 1979, when the G-Wagen or Geländewagen (which means: “cross-country vehicle”) went on sale to consumers, and like other military-heritage 4×4′s became a vehicle of legend. Fast forward even further to 2010, and the latest iteration of the “box on wheels”, is not only something straight out of our childhood dreams, but actually real, at least in concept – and hardly what you’d expect from the same parent company that creates Smart cars.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon Light Armored Patrol Vehicle 6.X (Concept), conceived by Mercedes-Benz to set a new standard in armored patrol vehicles (or lustworthy objects) and an improvement to the existing LAPV 5.4. The G-Wagon LAPV 6.X is powered by a high torque common rail diesel engine with a 1.3 ton payload capability, and capable of 93mph – something we wouldn’t want in our sight lines at full-bore. Its monocoque full steel body provides ballistic protection, a tight wheelbase that offers 50° approach and 45° departure angles, nearly 18″ of ground clearance, tire inflation system, and integration of military tech EADS systems which include vehicle data recorder, UHF/VHF communications system with Tetrapol base station capability, integrated mobile command system, and radar jamming. Something we doubt will be showing up on E classes anytime soon.
Our greatest fear though, remains the same… suburban soccer moms getting a hold of these. I may trade my G wagon in if this hits the US market.

Salvatore Piccolo at Pitti Uomo 82 Spring/Summer 2013

Pitti Uomo is underway and one of the best S/S 2013 previews to hit the webs is that of Napoli designer Salvatore Piccolo. For next spring, the designer looks to blend Japanese fabrics with Italian styling and construction. Look for Japanese denim selvedged shirts as well as those of the cotton and canvas variety. There are also a handful of Piccolo-exclusive fabrics that can be seen on some of the linen suiting. All-in-all, there’s much to appreciate in Salvatore Piccolo’s Spring 2013 offerings, most of which can be seen below.

Maison Martin Margiela Leather Oxford Shoe

Maison Martin Margiela Leather Oxford Shoe

These Maison Martin Margiela Oxfords are part of their Autumn/Winter 2012 pre-collection, which is all fine and well, but we mostly care about the caramel-y leather uppers. You could practically spread these with jam, dip them in coffee and take a bite. Better you just put them on, however, and move through your day with a barely perceptible spring in your step afforded by the knowledge that you have not only some stand-out shoes on your dogs, but also a sweet little stitch detail on the backs of them that make you feel right special indeed. Oki-Ni has them.

Violet Hour Whale Facade – Speakeasies

violet hour whale facade 01 Violet Hour Whale Facade Speakeasies

The speakeasy revival has cooled somewhat over the past couple of years, but Chicago’sViolet Hour—one of the first newfangled clandestine watering holes in the nation—keeps things fresh with some constantly rotating art on their facade. This being a right-proper speakeasy, the front of it is sort of an anti-facade; essentially a stretch of wooden slats with a barely noticeable door.
The time-lapse video below shows artist Benjamin Oakley Wilson giving the front of the joint its most recent update: a nice big sperm whale. The romantic notions of Moby Dickthe whale conjures are actually a decent fit for some of the novel cocktailing going on inside. Particularly the Breakfast of Thompson, a blend of Appleton White rum, grapefruit juice, Rhum J.M. Blanco, grenadine, sparkling water, and campfire bitters which we can only assume is a tribute to the good doctor of journalism (who was known to quote Melville).

BMW Zagato Coupe

Zagato, the Milanese automotive design house, doesn’t really have to uphold its longstanding and stellar reputation for producing some of the most beautiful vehicles this side of oxygenated planets. The BMW Zagato Coupe, recently created for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, one of the most prestigious automobile and motorcycle events around. If you think it’s just a rehash of the stock BMW Z4, you’d better get your eyes checked. The entire body was hand-crafted, despite the use of modern design techniques and technology. More details about this special automobile, photos, and a fascinating video clip on how the collaboration between the two companies took place, all after the jump.

The design is clearly both fluid and sinewy, while evoking both BMW and Zagato styling cues. One of our favorite aspects are the Zs embedded into the BMW kidney grilles in three modes, the first using matte finish Zs that are viewable straight on, the second using blackened Zs octagonally, and the third using chrome Zs on the sides of the same octagons. This level of detail sets Zagato apart from the rest. The smooth Kamm-tail rear end that provides a clean finish to the tapered rear haunches and the signature twin-bubble roof also let everyone know that this is no standard Z4 but one blessed with the Zagato touch. Rumors of limited production have surfaced, and we hope the rumor comes to fruition. It might just be the best looking Bimmer we’ve come across in a while.
