The Bentley Ghost

Imagine taking the sunday drive in the new GhostRolls-Royce has announced at the Shanghai auto show that its new Bentley Continental–fighting sedan, which was previewed by the 200EX concept at the 2009 Geneva auto show and has been known only as the RR4, will be called the Ghost. Production will commence later this year at the company’s Goodwood plant in the U.K., and European deliveries will begin shortly after. Sales in the U.S. and Asia will wait until the second quarter of 2010. Base price for the Ghost here will be $245,000, plus taxes and delivery.

Rolls also announced final specifications for the new car. The 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12 will pump out 563 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque and will mate to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Zero to 60 mph is said to take 4.8 seconds, and the top speed will be governed at 155 mph. Likely to be shown in production trim at the Frankfurt auto show in September, the 2010 Ghost will slot below the current Phantom range and gives Rolls-Royce a more attainable model to compete against the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, as well as the upcoming 2010 Aston Martin Rapide. At 212.6 inches long—with a 129.7-inch wheelbase—76.7 inches wide, and 61 inches tall, the new Rolls is slightly longer and taller than the Bentley, but a smidge narrower. The Continental lineup also includes GT coupe and GTC convertible versions, and we expect two-door and droptop iterations of the Ghost to launch after the sedan.

2011 Ducati Monster

From its stripped-down styling and tubular trellis frame to its exposed L-twin engine and large dual exhaust cans, the Monster 796's road presence is all about elemental simplicity. Those raw visual cues recall an era when you could see through motorcycles, and they're backed up with simple mechanical underpinnings such as an air-cooled engine that incorporates the same desmodromic valve setup that Ducati has used for decades.

The fuel-injected 803-cc engine produces 87 hp at 8250 rpm and 58 lb-ft of torque at 6250 rpm, which is relatively tame compared to all-out, liquid-cooled superbikes. However, considering the Monster 796 weighs only 369 pounds dry, or 373 pounds when equipped with the optional ABS system ($1000), those figures yield a class-leading power-to-weight ratio. Exhaust from the engine routes through a 2-1-2 setup using an updated heat-shield design, and the powerplant pairs to a six-speed gearbox through a hydraulically actuated, APTC-style slipper clutch. With its revised flywheel and engine castings, the 796's powerplant is actually lighter than the 696's (incidentally, maintenance costs have been reduced thanks to a 7500-mile service interval). Fuel economy is estimated at 42 miles per gallon (combined city/highway).

What is allure? Who had or has allure? Every era has chosen its own models. Who are they? How did they differentiate themselves? How did they style their lives? The Allure Of Women highlights our most well-known icons, women recognized all over the world, for their style and elegance. Francois Baudot also invites you to discover lesser-known women of allure, envied and copied by people within their own world. Chic, natural and elegant, women are captured in lavish photographs and compelling text, making The Allure Of Women impossible to put down.

Jaeger-LeCoultre unlocks the Aston Martin DB9 with new AMVOX2 Transponder

Getting into your car is getting slicker all the time. Remember when you used to have to physically put your key in the door to get inside? Most undignified. Keyless entry remotes were followed by automatic proximity transmitters that unlock the doors for you when you walk up to the car. But even that requires a superfluous keychain dongle. Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has the answer, but only if you happen to drive an Aston Martin. And have nearly $25k to spare.
